Ferenczi's Secret Life: Mutual Analysis as a Relational Paradigm with Peter Rudnytsky, PhD, LCSW

Ferenczi's mutual analysis with Elizabeth Severn is one of the most controversial and consequential episodes in the history of psychoanalysis. Routinely attacked by conservative commentators as a boundary violation and an exploitation of the patient, Rudnytsky defends Ferenczi's experiment on both counts and argues that mutual analysis serves as a paradigm for the two-person model of relational analysis, as Freud's self-analysis is a paradigm for the one-person model of classical analysis.

SPSI Scientific Session: “The Spark of Life” with Judy K. Eekhoff PhD, FIPA

Some patients do not trust their own experiences. Since they cannot trust themselves, they look to others to show them what to do. Mimicry and “as if” behavior become the means for survival in a world that feels alien to them. Their ability to use personal truth for psychic nourishment is compromised. Desperate and isolated, they deaden themselves to get by. Worse still, their deadness may also indicate a developmental deficit that leaves them feeling as if they do not exist. Often, they describe themselves as going through the motions of life, but not living it.

Recognition Theory, Intersubjectivity and the Third with Jessica Benjamin, PhD

In Beyond Doer and Done To, Benjamin expands her theory of mutual recognition and its breakdown into the complementarity of ‘doer and done to.’ Her innovative theory charts the growth of the Third in early development through the movement between recognition and breakdown, and shows how it parallels the enactments in the psychoanalytic relationship.

SPSI: “A Psychoanalysis for Inner & Outer: A treatment model for addressing psychic and social oppressive conditions based on the work of Paolo Freire” with Martin Bullard, LICSW

Contemporary psychoanalysis searches for its own identity, endeavoring to be just, inclusive and a healing perspective in our changing and chaotic world.

Martin Bullard, LICSW, a white male clinician, will present ideas and experiences in cross racial psychoanalytic work having to do with difference, identity, and the analysis of oppressive conditions. Martin will discuss how the ideas of Brazilian radical educator Paolo Freire help him “widen the scope” of psychoanalysis to include both internal & external oppressive conditions.
