A Dialogue about Wilfred Bion Enika Cocoli Bowen, PhD and Jeffrey Eaton, MA FIPA

This dialogue is about Bion, the man, the psychoanalyst, the theorist, the philosopher, an unassuming man with a lot to say, a fine sense of humor, a deep stillness amid deep turmoil; one whose “sins remembered” reverberate through a panoply of feelings for the reader. The dialogue will begin between two practitioners, an experienced psychoanalyst with deep connections to Bion’s thinking, and a psychologist, with younger roots in Bion . Although the dialogue begins between two, it is hoped that it will soon grow to a broad conversation among many.

Balint group for case consultation; Kathy Knowlton, PhD & Kris Wheeler, MA

Balint group can infuse your practice with mind and heart-opening case consultation.  These groups are for therapists who are at a stage in their work where they aren’t looking for direction and/or technical guidance in their practice but recognize the value of developing and deepening empathic emotional connection with their patients.  Balint groups help cultivate your imaginative comprehension of the patient’s whole experience, which in turn expands your creative options for engaging.

NPSI Scientific Meeting: Unconscious Phantasy, Part 1 by Jeffrey L Eaton, MA, FIPA

The topic of Unconscious Phantasy is central to understanding the theoretical models developed by Melanie Klein, Wilfred Bion, Donald Meltzer, and many analysts in the British object relations tradition. In 2017 the International Journal of Psychoanalysis devoted several articles to exploring this theme (Int J Psychoanal 2017 98: 779-859). In the spirit of fostering community conversation devoted to key concepts in psychoanalysis, our December, February, March, and spring meetings will offer detailed explorations of Unconscious Phantasy drawing on the IJP articles and other sources.

Working with Negative Transference (5 Classes) - Sue Carlson, MA and D. Michael Louderback, MA

This course considers what the negative transference is and how we can work with it.  In other words, how do we know if we are being a good “bad object” or just a bad therapist? When positive feelings dominate the therapy, the work is enjoyable for client and therapist but many clients need us to feel and know their anger and even hate. At such times they may locate in us critical, hateful, and withholding parental figures and experience us as bad objects. Under such stress we may perceive such clients as bad objects as well, leading to a cycle of righteousness and persecution.
