Saving Talk Therapy: How Health Insurers, Big Pharma, and Slanted Science are Ruining Good Mental Health Care

In-depth, time-intensive, expressive/exploratory psychotherapy is in decline due to the underfunding of mental health services by health insurers, the over-promotion and over-consumption of medications, and a veritable monoculture of ideas and practices in graduate schools and clinical training sites privileging short-term, technique-driven, solution-focused cognitive-behavioral treatments. These themes will be explored in Dr. Gnaulati's presentation, as well as his ideas pertaining to what constitutes quality talk therapy.

Pure Experience: Psychology, Buddhism and Neuroscience in Conversation

This is a third in a series of conversations with Dr. Maxine K. Anderson, Dr. Karl Brunnhölzl and Dr. Christof Koch, and moderated by Dr. Don J. Ross.

Pure experience is the name that the philosopher William James gave “to the immediate flux of life which furnishes the material to our later reflection with its conceptual categories.” It is experience as it is actually lived and not an idealization of experience. Pure experience refers to experience before it is conceptualized or retrospectively analyzed.

Scabbiolo will use clinical material, articles, literature, and film to throw light onto the complexity of this phenomenon.
